Ensure there is an ~/.Xresources file (probably copy ~/.Xdefaults) -- and put something like the following in: 

Xft.dpi:        96
Xft.antialias:  true
Xft.hinting:    true
Xft.rgba:       rgb
Xft.hintstyle:  hintslight
